The historic mission, Apollo 11, set off on July 16, 1969, with astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins aboard the spacecraft. It was a mission set to achieve a goal set by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 – to land a man on the moon and return him safely to Earth before the decade was out. The spacecraft was launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, with thousands watching anxiously on the ground and millions more glued to their television sets across the globe.
The journey to the moon took four days. After entering the lunar orbit, Armstrong and Aldrin separated from Collins in the command module and descended in the lunar module, aptly named “Eagle”. They touched down on the lunar surface on July 20, at a site they named “Tranquility Base”.
“Tranquility Base here, the Eagle has landed,” Armstrong communicated to mission control, marking their successful arrival. Several hours later, he took the historic first step onto the lunar surface, declaring, “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”
After spending 21.5 hours on the moon’s surface, during which they planted the US flag and gathered soil and rock samples, Armstrong and Aldrin ascended in the Eagle to reunite with Collins. Apollo 11 began its journey back to Earth on July 21 and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on July 24. The mission was a huge success and marked a pivotal moment in space exploration.
